Aidi's point of view about English as a Foreign Language in public schools
My believe is that the English language in Puerto Rico public school system is being label as taugh as a Second Language but is really taugh as a Foreign Language. I got to the conclusion by observing the students behavior in an English classroom. In this classroom the teacher asks questions about the material being instruct and tries to implement and make the students talk in English but when she gets the response is in Spanish. Lets not ignore the fact that afterall Puerto Rico, first language is still Spanish, that said students believe they don't need to speak English, at all. As adults we get the idea that we do need the English language, the international language. For instance, when we travel, in most parts of the world you would need the English in order to get some acommodiations. Also students whom are planning to attend college needs at least, intermediate knowledge of English, in order to comprehend the books, some of the professors and even other students. But still this does not cause awarenness so what can we do?? Should we give a basic comprehension exam both in oral and writing English to citizens that are applying to "La Reforma" or "Los cupones" so they could be more interest not only learning but speaking the English language.
